InTASC Standard #10: Leadership and Collaboration
- The teachers seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession.
To best show my competence in InTASC standard #10 (leadership and collaboration) I will use multiple artifacts, including my letter home to parents, and a poll given in class which shows evidence of collaboration with learners and colleagues. Standard #10 asks the teacher to be able to take responsibility for student learning. It asks us to use collaboration with the people around us to advance the classroom and ensure learner growth.
I chose to use the letter home as one of my artifacts because it shows that I am willing and ready to communicate with the parents of the students I am now teaching. I chose to use the poll in class because it allows me to talk to the students and to easily see how they feel about what I am asking them to do. I feel like this is an appropriate representation because it shows that I value my student’s opinions about learning very highly. They are their own advocates for learning and I believe they know what type of instruction will help them succeed. After I had collected an assignment which I had created, I thought it would be good to get some feedback to see if it was a valuable exercise in the student’s eyes. I created a poll and had the students fill it out for me on “kahoot.it.” After viewing the results as a class we analyzed the data and talked about what it meant. Overall, the message I received was positive and I felt much better about doing the project again. Though the poll is a good starting point, I continue to ask my students what exactly works, and sometimes, why doesn't this type of instruction excite you? I am constantly attempting to alter my lesson plans so that they better align with the needs of my students. The letter home is appropriate because it shows my position as a leader to my students, along with collaborating with the parents so they get an insight as to how I will be handling things as the class goes on.
Both of the artifacts helped me grow as a teacher because they both forced me to take a leadership role in the classroom. The letter was a symbol that I would be taking over the class and that I, for the time being, hold the same authority as my co-teacher. This was a good way to get my feet wet when talking to parents. The poll helped me grow by allowing some reflection and some great feedback from students; most of whom are very forward with opinions on teacher advancement.
